Australia Day Traditions

Every year on the 26th of January, what started out as 3, but then has been cut down to 2, people gather for the annual Australia day Ice Hand Championships.

It started 6 years ago on a stinking hot day back in Sydney, where myself, Lucinda and Bondy (who is no longer apart of the game) were complaining about how hot it was.  We saw a large container of ice and then talked about how good it would be if we jumped in to cool down.  This somehow lead to the brilliant idea of us putting out hand in the ice and seeing how long we could last.  This stupidity is now carried out every Australia day.

What does the winner get?  Other than a sore hand and regret.... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Pretty Bag Wish List

After a boring Sunday in bed, Charlotte and I decided that a day trip window shopping in central London was in order.

After window shopping in Covent Garden we strolled down to Regent Street and into the most amazing store.  Libertys.

Bags were the item of the day.  So I have complied a wish list of bags that one day (if I ever win the lotto) will own.

1.  This Kate Spade bag.

3. Kipling... I want one of those monkeys!

4. Michael Kors - Its just SO pretty

5. Alexander McQueen. (Pictured first).  This is the ultimate dream bag #tasty

One day!

Let it snow!

As an Australian in London, one of the most exciting thing about Winter is the possibility of snow.  Whats the point of it being so cold if you can't even enjoy how pretty London could look covered in white powder (until everyone wakes up and destroys it)

Last year I was bitterly disappointed with the lack of snow.  That was one of my main things that I wanted to see.

So this year, hearing more and more stories about it snowing in the North has given me hope.

I've had 3 different people on different occasions, send me messages about it snowing where they are.

Charlotte was nice enough to send me snap chats of it snowing while she was up North for Christmas and I was sitting in a pool of my own sweat in Australia.

Thom sent me a facebook message today.  Even though he lives with us, he works up North during the week.  His main concern was being stuck, while mine was that I'm going to go crazy looking out the window thinking that every small white bird that passes by is a dream come true #ImSoLame

The Christmas Boyfriend  decided to tell me last night about it snowing because he knows how much I want to see it.  Whether this is a sick ploy from him to try and get me to visit him, I don't know, but the boy does not play fair.  And he doesn't deserve the snow, because all he is doing is complaining about how cold it is.

Will I ever get snow?

I just want to build a snowman!

Speed Dating Adventures

My housemate Charlotte and I have a London bucket list.

Things we have been slowly been trying to tick off for a while now, and one of those things is speed dating.  So I got a message from Charlotte while I was back home about a speed dating event that looked interesting.  So with the promise that no word would be said to the winter boyfriend, I agreed to go for a bit of fun.

What I didn't expect was the next day to end with matches, memory loss, a message from a guy telling me I was his highlight of the night and told me to get in contact with him and a killer hangover.

Lets rewind a bit.

We were told to arrive early as we could miss out if we were running late, so Charlotte and I figured to go early, find the place and have some drinks as neither of us wanted to take this too seriously.

Walking into the bar, we quickly discovered that we were the only females there and with a weary eye on the door, we just kept seeing more and more men walk through.  So we decided the only way to deal with this is to make sure we keep the alcohol flowing.  So 2 large wines down in roughly 30 minutes, we were feeling much better about the situation.

We were called downstairs to where the event was taking place, found a place to sit and decided to just chill at the tables instead of standing with the sausage fest that was surrounding the bar.  What we both didn't expect was for the guys to come over and talk to us.  As the wine switched to cocktails, the event was kicked off.

14 guys, 4 minutes each.

Now 4 minutes is a short amount of time when you are having a great conversation with somebody, or a very long time when you have nothing to say to somebody ( I had a couple of those, one in which resulted in getting the guy to write my name in Japanese on my arm as it gave us something to talk about)

I don't know if the guys were attracted to our winning personalities or the fact that we were the only females that weren't really taking it seriously but after the "dates" had finished we were surrounded by guys wanting to talk to us.  They remembered everything we talked about and all I could think was I wish they hadn't removed their name tags because I had no idea who these people were (to say I was drunk at that point would be an understatement.)

While I started dancing with people in the empty cocktail bar, Charlotte decided to start making out with a guy she just kept telling me looks like Jim from the Office (US).

At some point in the night, we figured we better leave as Charlotte had work in the morning.  A guy decided he wanted to walk us to the tube station, but that just ended with me insisting that we dance on the sidewalk, and soon after, we lost him (sorry kind stranger and because I didn't say yes to you.. I shall never know your name.)

Quickly deciding that the tube was out of the question as Charlotte was throwing up, we got an Uber home leaving us to feel extremely sorry for ourselves in the morning.

The next day we got an email saying we had our results.  Kinda awkward that I matched with people that I don't remember talking to.  However I must of made an great first impression to people, especially one guy who said I was the highlight of his night and I was so genuine and wants to meet up again.

If I have learnt anything from this experience, when they tell you to not get drunk - best to listen!

Would I do it again?  Hell yes.. Stay tuned for the next awkward speed dating adventure!

10 amazing facts about being a red head

So because today is international kiss a ginger day, I thought I would share with you some facts that I have learnt about being a red head.

1. Natural red hair is harder to dye than other shades
Headstrong as it is, ginger hair holds its pigment much firmer than any other hair colour. If redheads desired to dye their hair to any other colour (why would you?), it would only have a noticeable difference after bleaching the hair beforehand. Otherwise, the colour won't take.
Bleaching, of course, is just bad news for hair. Especially red hair, which is much more fragile than other shades anyway.
2. Redheads have less hair on their heads
In terms of total number of strands, gingers have far fewer atop their red heads than any other colour.
On average, flame-haired beauties have 90,000 strands, compared to blondes with 110,000, and brunettes with 140,000.
They're not exactly going bald though, as each strand of natural ginger hair is much thicker, so the appearance is often that redheads have more hair in general.
These fewer but thicker strands make it easier to style, so be jealous.
3. Redheads don't go grey
Staying true to its stubborn stereotype, ginger hair retains its natural pigment a lot longer than other shades.
So there's no need to panic about going grey - red hair simply fades with age through a glorious spectrum of faded copper to rosy-blonde colours, then to silvery-white.
4. Red hair and blue eyes is the rarest combination in the world
The majority of natural redheads have brown eyes, with others likely to have hazel or green shades.
But like red hair, blue eye colour is a recessive trait, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for a child to be blessed with it. This makes those with red hair and blue eyes the rarest minority in the world, with only 1% having both.
So, each one is about as rare as a four-leaf clover.
5. They're more sensitive to thermal pain
Countless studies have looked into the genetics behind redheads claiming that they are more or less sensitive to pain.
Research shows that redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold pain, with their bodies able to change temperature much quicker.
Also, in surgery, gingers might require approximately 20% more anaesthesia than other hair colours. The exact reason for this is unknown, but it is thought that a link to the mutated MC1R gene could be the culprit to its effectiveness.
6. The Romans kept redheaded slaves at a higher price
Those with fiery-coloured hair were held in high esteem in Roman art and culture. Thought to be strong and determined, they were more expensive than other slaves, and prisoners would even have their hair dyed to be displayed as trophies.
Either that, or wigs of red hair were reportedly imported from northern Europe, for slaves to wear.
7. Russia means 'Land of Reds'
Translating to mean 'Land of Reds', Russia boasts a high density of gingers located in its Kazan region, at over 10% redheads, a similar density to Scotland and Ireland.
8. 40% of Brits are 'Secret Gingers'
Extensive research conducted by BritainsDNA has found that more than 40% of the population carry the mutated MC1R gene that's responsible for red hair.
Both parents must carry the gene to be able to spawn a ginger baby, which lies at 25% if they're not ginger themselves, but still carry the 'secret gene'.
9. Adolf Hitler reportedly banned ginger marriages
...For fear of 'deviant offspring'. Of course.
10. Gingers generate their own Vitamin D
Having pale skin may mean that redheads burn more easily when exposed to UV rays, but their paleness can serve as an advantage.

Too much time to think

There is nothing like not being able to leave the airport and being stuck for 5 hours in Tokyo that really starts to make you think about everything.

About how I want to travel more this year.

About how I want to take more chances.

About how I want to really start living my life.

Didn't help that this song came up on my ipod while I am staring out a huge window at planes and tiny tiny cars.

Life's for the living, so live it... or you're better off dead!

My bags are packed and I'm ready to go...

Time flies when you are having fun and this has never been more true.

Today is my last day in Australia until I don't know when.

The last time in my bed, the last time in my car, the last time using dollars, the last time I get to see my Sister.

I wish I could say that I got to do everything that I wanted to do on my trip but I can't.

I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to.  I didn't get to eat all the foods on my Aussie food list.  I didn't get to go places that I miss.

But I figure that is just a great reason to come back again.

But what I did manage to do was amazing.

I saw a lot of my friends.

I spent New Years twerking at the tv as the fireworks went off.

I went to the zoo.

I went to see Dirty Dancing the musical.

I took full advantage of the boxing day sales.

Most importantly I got to be around my family.

This isn't going to help with being homesick and saying goodbye is going to suck.

But cya Sydney.  I shall see you again!

My Australian Haul

1. This dress.  Its light and pretty and I'm sure if I pair it with tights and a cardi I can still rock it out in London.

2. I needed a new carry on bag for my flight back.  Once I saw this bag I knew that I needed it.  I have an obsession with feathers and this bag is just perfect!

3. These PJs.  I am obsessed with Peter Alexander PJs.  They are just the most comfortable things in the world and thanks to after Christmas sales, much more affordable.

4. This dressing gown which is also Peter Alexander.  I fully plan to live in this.. and its so pretty.

5. Well here it is.  The microphone I will be starting my podcasts with.  Not the best but hopefully it will work out for what I need it for.

6. This laptop case that I needed for my flight.  Simple and classy.... not like me :)

7. These light comfortable pants and a couple of t-shirts for when the weather gets a bit warmer in London (I have already worn the pants and I'm in love with them.)

8. Excuse the blurry photo.. I was so excited that I actually had these shoes again.  So comfortable and will be my go to walking shoes (stay tuned as I might actually go out and buy more)

9. Kimono jacket that I'm slightly in love with.  I know I won't be wearing it a lot, but I needed it.

10. A standard in every girls underwear draw is bonds undies.  I will not be showing you but they are super pretty and comfy.

11. A new journal.

12. Flat shoes.  Opened toe is more for Australia but I'll keep them safe until summer again and my black ballet flats in London are dying so I got some new ones.

13. A staple in every Australian diet is chicken salt.  I ordered some online and had to give it to my workmates when I left to come home as they didn't want to have plain chips anymore.  So I brought me some more.

14. My Christmas pressies.  A girl can never have too much perfume and earrings!

So I may or may not have a shopping problem.  Whoops!

Road Rage!

After arriving back home, it took me all of 5 hours to get back in my car and start driving.

I always missed my car and its amazing ability to turn me into a lazy person who liked to listen to cheesy music way to loud.

While I am still that loud cheesy music loving fool, I feel like I have lost some of my lazy.

What I have discovered that I also have not lost is my road rage.

All of 5 minutes into my rage I was screaming out my standard car insult "YOU CLOWN!" to a person who randomly braked for no reason.

Weaving in and out of traffic like an expert, and giving death stares to people who were going 50ks in a 60 zone.

I forgot that I changed into a driving demon once I sit behind the wheel of my car.

One thing the demon within has forgotten however, is to park.  As it took me 4 attempts to parallel park outside my house tonight, she wasn't so cocky after that.

Maybe its a good thing I don't drive in London!

Happy New Year!

So 2014 was a good year.

Sure I've had some down moments but on the whole, its been a good one.

I got a job where I met some amazing people who I will be friends with for a very long time no matter where in the world we are.

I've had some amazing parties where even though sometimes I don't remember everything that happened, I know it was a great night.

I went to my first festival which just happened to be Glastonbury (can't get much better than that.)

I was a witness to my friend get married and I see how much she is in love every time she talks about her husband.

I have formed a great little family with my housemates whom I know I will be friends with forever!

So I am going to set myself goals for 2015.  They are not resolutions cos I know some of them I won't do and I don't want to be a failure straight off the bat.

1. Finally make up my mind about whether or not I want to stay in London.
2. Travel more.
3. Tick off more things on my London bucket list.
4. Really try and get into a radio career.
5. Take a photo every day.
6. Start my 5 year memory book that Charlotte got me for Christmas.
7. Go to Glastonbury again (make sure I have a working air mattress.)
8. Do something that scares me.  (Staying in London doesn't count)
9. Try and stay in contact with my Australian friends more.
10. Try and attempt to start cooking for myself more often (not microwave meals.)

2015 is going to be a great year.  I know because I will make it one!

Hope everyone had a great holiday period, let 2015 begin.
